This collection contains materials relating to the operation of the Confederate States Subsistence Department in Richmond, Va. The papers include the correspondence, 1861-1865, of Francis Gildart Ruffin (1816- 1892) and Lucius Bellinger Northrop (1811-1894) of the Subsistence Department concerning issues of supply; miscellaneous papers, 1862-1865, regarding the availability and procurement of supplies throughout the Confederacy; and letterbooks, 1864, containing copies of Subsistence Department letters and telegrams. Correspondents in the collection include, among others, G.T. Beauregard (1818-1893), Jefferson Davis (1808- 1889), Robert E. Lee (1807-1870), and James Alexander Seddon (1815-1880).

Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) served as General of the Confederate Army in the U.S. Civil War and was president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia from 1865 to 1870.
